STARZ 14U are 2010 State Champs!
On Sunday, May 30,
2010, the STARZ 14U team was crowned the 2010 AAU State Champions!
This group of ladies competed against a series of teams from across
the state of Alabama including the Alabama Twisters Elite, NW
Alabama Shooters, North Alabama Blast, and North Alabama Twisters to
earn their elite status. The team attained a 5 - 1 record during
tournament play losing only one game to the North Alabama Twisters.
This loss was avenged in the finals with a 68 - 48 win over their
arch rivals. The STARZ claimed a powerful lead in the first four
minutes of play by establishing a commanding 20 - 6 lead. The STARZ
never looked back. The final score was 68 - 48 and EVERYONE ON THE
TEAM SCORED! Thirty-one percent of points scored were acquired
from 3-point shooting! The team also demonstrated a great deal of
grit and tenacity by "crashing the boards" and "minimizing" turn
overs.
The 14U STARZ, who
also recently claimed the Kentucky Super Regional Title, look
forward to competing in the FILA National Tournament (Suwannee, GA),
AAU Nationals (Orlando, FL), and The Freshman Showcase (Orlando,
FL). The ladies are currently seeded 13th in the nationals.
However, claiming the Alabama state title should boost the seeding
even higher. Congratulations to Coach Sam Garth, his
staff, and the 14U team!

the score of 41-30 giving them their 5th straight tournament
win. In just a couple of weeks this team will be

talented team!!!!!
STARZ 12U-Garth take 1st Place in the Lady
Patriot Shootout! -
Our Starz 12u-Garth take first place in the
Lady Patriot Shootout on Sunday.
Congrats to this team!
Starz
12u – Garth
- To sum the
weekend up in one word would be EMOTION!! The team played with
EMOTION and left it all on the floor in every game of the Mystics
Shootout! With the 12u - Garth team playing UP in the 13u bracket,
the girls started the tournament against a much taller Bama’s Best
13u team. The team started off slow but picked the pace up and
began what is now our “signature pressure” resulting in a 60-46 win
to end the night. On Saturday morning, the girls started the day
off on an early quick start, once again showing our signature
pressure to pace ourselves to a fast win of 46-28 vs. Bama’s Heat
13u team. The Saturday morning win set up a much anticipated
matchup with our local rival, the Alabama Elite 12u team and a
chance to avenge a devastating 2 point loss to the Elite during our
STARZ tournament. The team began with no mercy on the Elite jumping
off to an early 14 point lead!!! The Elite stormed back off at the
free through line tying the game up with 4 Starz players fouled out
of the game and 4 Starz players playing with 4 fouls, the game was
forced into overtime!! With the team, including 4 fouled out
players, the parents and fans cheering, the STARZ played with
EMOTION and stormed to victory with a final score of 52-47. This
win set up a matchup of the 13u Pelham Pride vs. the 12 STARZ –
Garth team for a Sunday afternoon championship game. Knowing that
our rival the Alabama Elite struggled with the Pelham Pride’s
triangle defense, losing to them by double digits, the STARZ
coaching staff put a plan into action. The team met Sunday
afternoon to discuss how badly we wanted to take the championship.
Coaches Sam, Dee and Maurice showed the girls 30 minutes before the
game how to beat this press. From the beginning of the championship
game until the buzzer, the girls beat the press!!! By beating the
press, the girls made several easy baskets to keep the lead. The
much talented Pelham Pride took a 1 point lead in the fourth
quarter; however the “signature pressure” was too much to handle
resulting in a 52-47 upset to win the championship!! After going
4-0, the team took off to CHUCKIE CHEESE to celebrate!
Congratulations to the players, coaches, parents and fans. GO STARZ
