About Us

Who are we? This is the home page of the Southern Starz Girls' Basketball program.  The Starz are a highly successful, competitive travel team organization based in Huntsville, Alabama that will be playing in our 11th year during 2010.  Many of our players are standouts on college, high school & middle school teams.  Surf on in and check us out.

What is AAU? AAU is an organization which provides an opportunity for young athletes to learn many of Life's Lessons through sports.  Being a part of an AAU team is about traveling, building new relationships, and getting to compete with and against very talented athletes.  Our teams  16u (Juniors), 15u (Sophs), 14u (Freshmen), 13u (8th Grade), 12u (7th Grade) & 10u (5th Grade) competing during 2010 will consist of talented girls from across the Huntsville, Madison County and all of North Alabama.

Our Teams - Our teams will compete in a variety of tournaments in North Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia during March, April, May and June of 2010.  Included in this schedule will be the Alabama AAU State tournament.  The State tournament will be held on Memorial weekend in May 2010 in Birmingham, Alabama determines which teams will represent our state at the National AAU tournaments.    In addition we plan to participate in various College Exposure & Showcase tournaments and the AAU National Championships to be held at various sites (Orlando, FL,  Kings Island, Ohio, Rochester, MN, etc.)  in June/July 2010.

Is there an age limit?  The age determination date for girls for AAU Basketball  CHANGED 2 yrs ago!!!  For AAU competition, the girls will (with a few exceptions) play in GRADE based age groups.  In other words, Juniors in high school will play 16 & Under, Sophomores will play 15 & Under, Freshmen will play 14 & Under, 8th graders will play 13 & Under and so on.  One reason for this change was due to the fact that college coaches evaluate players based upon their YEAR of graduation from high school (Class of 2011 or Class of 2012).  Organizations throughout the country have adjusted their teams as a result of this change.  You can find the formal definition of the Age Divisions for AAU at:  http://aaugirlsbasketball.org/pages/agedefinition_new.asp.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Starz Director, Doug Bush at (256) 508-7076 on his cell phone.
